Withycombe Under-15s played a big part in ensuring they got a game in at Torquay by loaning the hosts no fewer than four players to ensure a 14-a-side contest could take place.
The opening score of the game came from a nice off-load by Tom Humphrey that sent Finn Musgrove over for an early unconverted try.
Humphrey then scored the second Withy try, pouncing on a home error enforced by good visiting pressure.
A series of good hands saw the ball worked out to the fleet-footed Matt Shaw-Smith and he raced clear to cross under the post; a successful Matt Rye conversion gave Withy a 17-0 lead.
Shaw-Smith picked up a loose ball in his own 22 and showed the home side a clean set of heels with a sprint under the posts and that was followed soon after by more quick hands that sent Shaw-Smith clear for his hat-trick try.
From the restart, Humphrey gathered the ball and then ran three-quarters of the length of the pitch to bag his second try of the game and the final Withy try of a dominant first-half show was scored by Ben Wilkinson.
During the interval, players were switched around to ensure a more even second half, but Withy were soon back in scoring action when a strong run by Tom Real and a quick pick up by Will Cornish ended with the latter crossing and Lewis Hilliar converted.
Withy were then punished with a series of penalties that ended with the home side’s number eight scoring one of them. However, play was soon switched back to the opposite end of the pitch where more quick hands sent centre Jordan Cooke over.
Joe Graham was next to cross the Torquay line and Hilliar tucked over another conversion.
The plucky home side continued to battle away and richly deserved a late unconverted try, but Withy had the final say with another forwards try.
In what was a fine all-round Withycombe performance, the Man of the Match award went to Jayden Gore and Tom Real.
