Despite the inclement weather, there has still been plenty of action to keep the Madeira bowlers busy of late, writes Jenny Charles.
In a run of three friendly matches, two were won and one ended all square.
Four teams of mixed triples travelled to Torquay where they enjoyed a good win, with the rink of Chris Reed, May Dyson and Mary Clook [check surname - Cook?], impressive winners by 27 shots to two.
The Madeira men had a close encounter with Honiton; each game was well contested, but at the end of the day Madeira held an eight shot advantage.
The men also played away to Sidmouth. A relaxed and enjoyable afternoon was had by all and the result matched the whole event, an honourable and deserving draw!
The Devon County competition games are reaching their conclusions and Maderia are well represented.
In the pairs, Sandie Cox and Jenny Charles played and won against a Madeira team, only to find three days later they had to play Jan Roberts and Catherine King from Madeira! In what was a very competitive and close game, it seemed to be all over as Catherine drew two superb shots to the jack, but Sandie had one bowl left and played it perfectly.
The end result – a one shot win for Sandie and Jenny, who now play in the section final against Joy Penberthy and Janine Orchard at Exonia.
Congratulations must be afforded to Terry Reardon, Cliff Skinner and Mike Gorman, who have been selected to represent Devon in the Men’s Inter County against Gloucester to be played at Taunton. Good luck to them.
There was an exciting section final between Madeira’s Sue Harriott, Nikky Fiddemore, Janine Orchard and Chris Macaulay and Jill Bishop’s team from Sidmouth. It was a contest that served up some outstanding bowling and, thanks to a superb last end from Sue and Jill, the Madeira four secured a single shot victory at 23-22.
Janine Orchard was again enjoying success as she, together with Jan Roberts and Catherine King, secured a win over a Honiton team to secure a place in the Devon County final of the triples. There’s little doubt that Madeira will have plenty to cheer on at County Finals Day!
Finally for this week’s offering, there’s a great opportunity coming up for bowlers to see an exhibition match that is taking place in Exeter on February 11.
Exonia in Exeter plays host to a match between bowlers who are representing England at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia and the top Devon bowlers. There will be time for questions and answers to give us an insight on what it will be like to play in Australia.
We shall be cheering them on.
