Budleigh Salterton extended their unbeaten run to four games as they won a midweek South West Peninsula League Eastern Division game at Axminster Town 1-0.

The Robins scored what proved to be the only goal of a close encounter at Tiger Way when Mark Lever scored. However, the build-up to the goal was rather special as Mike White began the move that ended with Aaron Denny back heeling the ball some 20 yards from goal to completely ‘throw’ the home defence and Lever drilled the ball home.

On the half hour mark, Budleigh were a whisker away from a second when – with Denny again providing the ‘chance making pass’, Mike White saw a shot graze the bat.

In the second half Budleigh continued to boss proceedings with the home side restricted to the odd counter-attack.

What was most impressive about the Budleigh performance was the solidity of the back four with Dan Boere and Carl Riddell the central pairing with Daren Everest and Luke Iddon either sided and they gave precious little opportunity to the home team to threaten the Budleigh goal.

With five minutes remaining teenager Adam Wilkinson was played in to face the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation, but, from the edge of the area, the youngster drove the ball straight at a grateful home glovesman.

There was till time left for some late drama when the match referee, the surprise of many in the ground, spotted an infringement in the area and awarded Axminster a spot kick.

Town player-boss Johnny Hurford, who had come off the bench in the second half, took the kick but blasted it over the bar.

The win means that Budleigh, with three games remaining in their league season, stay in a top three spot and they now look highly likely to finish – at the very least, in a top four position. They are back in action on Saturday when they go to relegation-threatened Galmpton and Roselands.
