The Budleigh ladies kept up their impressive run of form with a good performance against local rivals Maderia as honours were shared with a 31-all draw, writes David Roberts.
Margaret Avery, Melissa Camp, Lilian Grainger and Bunty Hudson kept the lead to win through 20-15, whilst Ann Vincent, Dorothy MacConville, Joan Cowing and Di Lowe fought valiantly, but lost out 11-16.
In two home mixed friendlies there was more success for the club. Against Honiton there was a very close encounter as the Budleigh rinks sneaked the overall result by one bowl, 37-36. Margaret Avery, Mike Clark, Don Huish and Dick Mitchell won convincingly 26-8, whilst Ann Vincent, Tony Hanson, Lilian Grainger and skip John Dill came up against an impressive Honiton rink and lost out 28-11.
There were strong wins on both rinks against Mid Devon for the Budleigh bowlers. Melissa Camp, Stephen Lacey, Don Huish and Tony Lim played well together to see off their opponents 27-10, whilst Marion Lacey, Bunty Hudson, Lilian Grainger and skip Gerry Roberts finished their rink in fine style with two scores of four on the last two ends to win 20-14.
The men exited the County Trophy competition as they lost on all four rinks to Torquay 50-114. Best of the Budleigh rinks was that of Tony Lim, Brian Ward, Peter Burch and skip Gerry Roberts, who took the lead by two shots on the 15th end only to then suffer heavily as the Torquay team stormed back to score fourteen shots over the last six ends. Defeat overall sees the end to the men’s involvement in the knockout competitions.
This week is a quiet one for the club. The Budleigh Buzzards take on the Exonia Eagles and the Maderia Bluebirds play the Budleigh Falcons in the Coast Wealth Management League, whilst the club are involved in a mixed home friendly against Exonia.
