Withycombe Under-13 action versus Newton Abbot

Withycombe Under-13s were 36-14 winners when they travelled to meet Newton Abbot.

Withy began well against a sizeable home side, competing fiercely at the break down, tackling well and shipping the ball through the hands to create space to run into.

The good work and sustained pressure soon had Withy two tries up with the ball passing through numerous hands to land well worked scores.

The pressure continued, but Newton battled well in midfield and were able to stage a single counter attack in the face of determined Withy defence.

Tom Humphry and Leo Knowels were notable combining well to tackle and snuff out the home side intrusion.

Newton’s efforts were finally rewarded and half-time arrived with Withy leading 12-7.

The second half continued in the same manner with Withy piling on the pressure and playing controlled rugby, rucking and tacking well and getting the ball out wide. Four further tries were landed before a consolation effort from Newton before the final Withy try.

This was a resounding victory against a team that contained individuals who were head and shoulders taller, proving that the boys growing confidence should not be dented by the size of the opposition.

Strong tackling and aggressive rucking in numbers will always prevail.

The game can be summed up as a very competent determined effort against some big lads.

Notable work from Joe Graham at full back, Eddie Warlow upfront and Alex Wolsey on the wing.

The Withy try scorers were Finn Musgrove (2), Jayden Gore, Ben Wilkinson and Will Cornish. Cornish also slotted two conversions and Sam Diprose was also responsible fro a successful conversion.

There were two Man of the Match award winners. Men of the Match: Jayden Gore (forwards) for good work upfront and Ryan Daffin (backs) for stepping in at full-back for the first time and also for some superb tackling
