Topsham St James Ladies secured their first win of the season on a sunny day at Plymouth Cricket Club’s Mount Wise, writes Hannah Clarke.
Winning the toss and batting first, Topsham posted a commanding 151 for the loss of eight wickets.
The innings was dominated by debutant Emma Corney’s elegant knock of 64. Corney was unfazed by the regular fall of wickets around her, showing maturity beyond her years, before being removed playing an expansive shot to push the run rate towards the innings close.
The tail picked up where Corney left off and an unbeaten partnership of 13 between Jojo Baylis and Katharine Thomson ensured the fourth batting point was secured.
An economical start to the Topsham bowling put Plymouth behind the rate, with sisters Katy and Jojo Baylis returning combined figures of two wickets for 28 runs from their 14 overs.
Tight bowling was supported by an attacking field, with the fielding team reaping the benefits of two run-outs to dismiss numbers four and five in quick succession.
Plymouth opener Sheridan Lewis showed determination and resilience, facing 100 balls for 28 runs before finally falling in the 31st over and 10-man Plymouth were eventually dismissed 84 runs short of the target.
Topsham St James Ladies now look forward to a change of format, with their first game in the National T20 competition on Sunday (May 20) against Cornwood.
