After 24 years’ service in charge of senior rugby at the Imperial Ground, the Exmouth RFC director of rugby, Chris Wright, was recently honoured for his long and distinguished service

Chris, who achieved a number of top achievements during his time with the Cockles, oversaw the 1999/2000 promotion as champions up into the Western Counties West. Twice, the first time in 1998 and again in 2000, the Cockles won the Devon Junior Cup and, in 2002, the Cockles were promoted to South West Two at 1st XV level while the 2nd XV were crowned Devon Merit winners.

Twelve months later, as if to underline the growing strength through the Cockles’ playing ranks, the third XV were Exe Valley Merit Table winners.

In 2013/14 there was promotion to the National Two South and there were also Devon Cup successes in 2006/11/12/13/14 and 16!

Exmouth RFC president David Bassett, who was the club chairman when Chris Wright first arrived at the club, and worked with him for the next decade, says: “There are numerous memories of Chris Wright as Exmouth’s Director of Rugby. One abiding one is that every season he was always very proud and indeed protective of all the players’ efforts and achievements no matter what the outcome. There is one season in particular, 2015/16, that brought the club so many accolades that will stand out.

“It was the most successful in Exmouth RFC’s history with the 1st XV gaining promotion back to National Two as champions and winning the Devon Senior Cup for the eighth time.

“The 2nd XV were Devon Merit Table Champions; the Colts, Devon Colts Shield Winners and the Under-16s were in the final of their competition.”

David continued: “Chris Wright’s total commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for brand Exmouth RFC is well known here in Devon and across the many rugby clubs in Southern England. His generosity, sense of humour coupled with his enthusiasm for rugby football and life in general made him a good friend to all that met him. He was made a Life Member of Exmouth RFC in 2012 for his services to rugby.

“The major contribution that Chris has made to Exmouth RFC both on and off the field is immeasurable and he will forever be part of Exmouth RFC’s history.”
