Budleigh bowlers in impressive win against Exonia

Always closely contested matches, the meetings between the Budleigh and Exonia bowlers never disappoint and the recent meeting at Cricket Field Lane between the two clubs was again a lively affair, with the Budleigh team winning overall 44-31, writes David Roberts.

On rink one, Marion Lacey, Mike Shaw, Ann Vincent and Di Dixon took an early lead 12-3, only for their opponents to score seven shots over two ends and then consolidate to lead 19-16 with three ends to go.

It looked as if the home team were well beaten, but a solid last three ends saw the lead change again as the Budleigh bowlers played some great bowls to take the rink 24-19 in a fine performance.

Tony Lim, Stephen Lacey, Peter Cooper and skip Joan Shaw played well to keep control throughout their match, scoring consistently and, whilst there was a late rally by the Exonia team, the Budleigh bowlers won comfortably 20-12. A great win for the club.

In a visit to Sidmouth, the club had a different experience as overall there was a loss by twenty-three shots, but the best of the three rinks was that of Derek Stanley, Margaret Avery and Don Huish, who, in a close fought rink, scored four shots on the penultimate end to win 17-15.

In the Tuesday Triples league there was a good win for Team Oak as Anne Goddard, Brian Goddard and skip Brian Evans played well together to win 23-14.

The coming week sees a busy time for the ladies, who play friendly triples against Exonia and Sidmouth, and there is a further match in the Lane Trophy against Maderia.

There is a mixed friendly against Topsham and the men are in action in the Interclub against ISCA.
