Always closely contested matches, the meetings between the Budleigh and Exonia bowlers never disappoint and the recent meeting at Cricket Field Lane between the two clubs was again a lively affair, with the Budleigh team winning overall 44-31, writes David Roberts.

On rink one, Marion Lacey, Mike Shaw, Ann Vincent and Di Dixon took an early lead 12-3, only for their opponents to score seven shots over two ends and then consolidate to lead 19-16 with three ends to go.

It looked as if the home team were well beaten, but a solid last three ends saw the lead change again as the Budleigh bowlers played some great bowls to take the rink 24-19 in a fine performance.

Tony Lim, Stephen Lacey, Peter Cooper and skip Joan Shaw played well to keep control throughout their match, scoring consistently and, whilst there was a late rally by the Exonia team, the Budleigh bowlers won comfortably 20-12. A great win for the club.

In a visit to Sidmouth, the club had a different experience as overall there was a loss by twenty-three shots, but the best of the three rinks was that of Derek Stanley, Margaret Avery and Don Huish, who, in a close fought rink, scored four shots on the penultimate end to win 17-15.

In the Tuesday Triples league there was a good win for Team Oak as Anne Goddard, Brian Goddard and skip Brian Evans played well together to win 23-14.

The coming week sees a busy time for the ladies, who play friendly triples against Exonia and Sidmouth, and there is a further match in the Lane Trophy against Maderia.

There is a mixed friendly against Topsham and the men are in action in the Interclub against ISCA.
