Mixed friendly matches for the Budleigh bowlers have been a happy hunting ground recently and two more wins in the past week against Maderia and Ottery continued the good run for the club, writes David Roberts.
A great win for the Budleigh men in the Maderia match saw them run out winners in a very close encounter.
Jim Letten, David Evans, Brian Evans and skip Brian Crook started well, lost the lead midway through, and then dug deep to take the rink 21-18.
Tony Lim, Tony Hanson, Peter Cooper and Peter Burch again started well and were winning 14-2 after nine ends, but a spirited comeback from Maderia saw the away team go into the last end one shot ahead only for the Budleigh men to snatch the victory, scoring with a two on the last end! In the mixed friendly against Ottery at Cricket Field Lane, there was a 17 shots win for the Budleigh team as Ann Vincent, Tony Hanson, Brian Evans and Di Dixon played well to take their rink 17-12 and Melissa Camp, Mike Clark, Joan Cowing and skip Tony Lim didn’t let the side down as they came through 23-11 winners. The challenge for the club this indoor season has been making a consistent impression in the Devon Leagues and another two more men’s matches in the Interclub and Over-60s have resulted in heavy defeats in the past week. Against Dawlish there were losses on all four rinks as the club lost 45-128 with the best of the teams being that of Richard Cooper, Brian Ward, Gerry Roberts and skip John Dill and whilst losing by ten shots at one stage were well in contention.
Against Kingsley in the Over-60s the men were again outplayed on all four rinks and lost out 55-108. Bob Clifford, Rob Jerrard, Dick Mitchell and Don Huish were the best of the bunch as they fought back well but eventually lost out by four shots.
