Budleigh 2nds suffered a second successive afternoon of struggle in the field on their way to an eighth defeat in nine C Division East matches, beaten by a margin of 181 runs in their Ottermouth meeting with Kilmington.
The visitors batted first and powered their way to a closing total of 331-4 with opener Tom Gooding scoring an unbeaten 184.
With the previous Saturday’s visit to Sidmouth seeing the home team chalk up a whopping 443-1 it means that the ailing Budleigh 2nds have now sent down 90 overs in two games and been hit for 774 runs, taking just five wickets!
Of the seven bowlers used by the home side it was Nick Boult who had the most success with his five overs seeing him serve up figures of 2-40. Matt Murphy (1-45 from eight overs) and Sean Mills (1-45 from eight), were the only other bowlers to enjoy any wicket taking success.
The Budleigh reply lost wickets at regular intervals and there were just three contributions in double figures with the top individual score being the 47 scored by number six bat Joe Marley while number eight bat Luke Jefferson was unbeaten on 35 when Budleigh lost their final wicket to be bowled out for 150 midway through the 40th over. The only other home batsman to register a double figure score was number three Donovan Robinson who scored 12.
Budleigh 2nds have reached halfway in the league season sitting second bottom and are now 31 points from safety.
They begin the second half of their campaign on Saturday (July 7) when they entertain the only side to sit below them in the table, Clyst Hydon, when the sides met on the opening day of the season it was the home side that won a close encounter by a margin of eight runs. Clearly, neither side can afford to lose this coming game for the side that does will surely be staring down the barrel of slipping into the D Division East for 2019.
