Archant

The Exmouth Sea Angling Association held its presentation evening at Exmouth Town Football Club, writes Tim Clotworthy.

There was a healthy attendance, with a number of new members and the old faithfuls - with their partners and wives - all mixing and socialising, discussing the one that got away and the ones that didn’t!

Club members have enjoyed some great results throughout the past year with 11 specimen awards caught, along with three new club records being set.

Stuart Howard registered the most notable of the latter with a blonde ray that scaled at 16lb 13oz, and that also landed him the award for Best Specimen of the Year.

Tim Clotworthy also set a new record for a couches bream of 1lb 1oz and also there was also an inaugural boat record for a trigger fish weighing in at 1lb 11oz, by Will Leahy.

The monthly specimen league was one of the most hotly contested competitions of the year and it was still not decided completely at the beginning of December.

In the end, Adrian Jones came out on top, very closely followed by Gary Bowden and Nik Chandler.

The other monthly set venue league run by Ken Williams was won by Ken himself, winning the Tom Sheppard trophy, with Tony McGinty and Phil Sanders following closely behind.

The RD Ison ladies’ trophy was won by Joy Hillier for the most competition points through the year for our lady anglers. Due to relocation to Cornwall, however, Joy was unable to attend. The club wishes her and John all the very best in their new home, and new life across the border.

Finally, the last trophy of the evening was for Angler of the Year. This was, again, very keenly contested by a group of four anglers throughout the whole of the year all trying hard to lead the table.

At the end of the final competition, after all results were in, Adrian Jones had come out on top, with Nik Chandler, George Drew and Ken Williams closely following behind.

The club has high prospects for the coming year with 10 new members already signed up, so competition will be fierce as ever this season, and the older members will have their work cut out to hold on to their trophies.

Tight lines to you all and here’s hoping that 2018 is another great year for Exmouth Sea Angling Association.

New members are always welcome to this local friendly club. If interested, please visit www.exmouthsaa.co.uk for more information.
