A group of Cranbrook mums have successfully completed their final 5k run as part of the NHS’s ‘Couch to 5K’ programme.

The run – a circular 5km route around Cranbrook, starting and finishing at the Cranberry Farm – took place on Monday, May 26.

Runners were awarded medals, certificates and trophies.

The group was led by Laura Taylor, a qualified leader in running fitness, and the programme was organised on behalf of Active Devon, Cranbrook Healthy Town and the UK charity Sustrans.

Laura, a mum of two, came up with the idea to motivate parents and decided to start a running group. The School Gates Running Group was formed and parents from both Cranbrook schools came together for a run after dropping off their children at school in the morning.

Thirty people took part in the nine-week programme with two sessions a week, while 70 people followed the Facebook group using the NHS’s C25K App.

Laura said: “I planned each session, starting as a slow, steady progression run, structured with strength-building exercises and running techniques. Some ladies said that before the couch to 5km programme, the only thing they would ever run for was a bus!

“After the final week of training, the ladies could run 5km without walking or stopping. It was amazing and inspiring to watch.”

Catherine Wells, one of the runners, said: “I can’t believe I actually completed it! Running through the finish line with the support from the friends I’ve made was the best feeling ever. It has changed my life!”
