The Withycombe record in first games of a new year is a mixed one over recent seasons.

Going back to the 2009/10 season when the side were playing ion the Tribute Western Counties (W) division and they won their opening game, a January 16, 2010 home game against Devonport Services 18-11, they have won four and lost three of the following seven ‘first of the year’ matches.

Twelve months ago the opening game of 2017 was on January 7 when Withy won 21-3 at Topsham and two years ago they began 2016 with a 40-12 Raleigh Park win over Honiton. They had to wait for their first game in 2012 for they had a couple of matches called off before they first saw action in the new year on January 23.

In 2015 they began the year with a 14-7 defeat at Bude and the year before they had a Jan 11, 2014 fixture at Saltash that they won 24-19.

They were also away in the first action of 2013, going down 27-15 at Falmouth on January 5, but they began 2012 with victory when, also against Falmouth, but at Raleigh Park, they secured a 22-12 success.

In their first season of Tribute Cornwall and Devon rugby – the 2010/11 campaign – Withy began the year of 2-011 with a January 8 narrow 13-11 loss at home to Teignmouth.

The January fixtures have proved to be fruitful for Withy in recent years with their one defeat in January since 2015 being the January 23, 2017 23-16 defeat at home to Saltash.
