Exmouth cycle star Will Tidball picked up a couple of medals last week at the HSBC UK National Youth and Junior Track Championships held in Newport, Wales.

Will enjoyed first place finishes in a number of categories, including the Junior Male Madison, the Junior Male Kilometre Time Trial and the Junior Male Scratch Race.

Eighteen-year-old Will was also awarded his national shirt after his impressive set of displays.

There’s no rest for the young track star as he is now part of a 14-strong team of junior riders who will represent Great Britain at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, taking place in Aigle, Switzerland, from August 15 to 19.

Will, who will be appearing in his second junior world championships, is set to compete in the men’s endurance events, where he will be in action along with Charley Calvert and Ethan Vernon, the latter with whom he won a bronze medal in the elite British National Madison Championships in December.

Speaking after the Newport meeting and before the action in Switzerland, GB Cycling’s performance pathway manager Tom Stanton said: “The results we’ve seen from the junior endurance riders on the road this year, from domestic level right through to the prestigious UCI Junior Nations’ Cup series, have been excellent and I’ll be interested to see how this converts to their performance on the track at world level.

“Equally, while there are less racing opportunities for sprinters, the numbers the riders are producing in training are continually improving and I think we can expect some good results from the four sprinters.

“The development of talented young riders is a crucial component of the Great Britain Cycling Team’s remit and, while it’s always great for us to see British riders on the podium, I’ll also be looking for the riders to make the most of their opportunity of being selected to race against world-class competition, and to come away with learnings they can put to use in future competitions.”
