Withycombe were 34-24 winners when they entertained Hayle in a Tribute Cornwall and Devon League match.

In a bright start, Danny Sansom scored an eighth minute try and Lee Tanton slotted the conversion.

However, three minutes later, parity was restored as Hayle scored a converted try. Withy regained the lead with a penalty and a try from Jake O’Neil, but Hayle hit back once more with a second converted try and it left Withy with a narrow 15-14 lead.

The lead was extended when Sansom set up Scott Burgan to dot down under the posts. The try was converted and it looked as if Withy would score again, but, with the line beckoning, the ball bobbled forward in the ruck, allowing Hayle winger Joe Chadwick to run the length of the pitch and score under the posts.

The kick was charged down and half-time arrived with Withy holding a 22-19 lead.

A second half Tanton try gave Withy the bonus point and, when Tanton then tucked over the conversion, Withy were 29-19 to the good.

However, some indiscipline in the Withy ranks saw Hayle gifted a penalty from the Withy 22 at the restart. This was kicked to touch and the catch-and-drive movement by Hayle saw them score in the corner to make it 29-24. However, that was as good as it got for the visitors and the final score came from a second Tanton try of the game.

On Saturday (September 22), Withy travel to face early season table-toppers Plymouth Albion Oaks (3pm).

● The Withy ladies put in a battling performance against a very strong Topsham side. A Sian Williams try proved to be merely a consolation on the day for Withy as they lost 56-5.

● The Withycombe Charity Coffee Morning takes place this Saturday (September 22) running from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Find out more now at www.withycomberugby.co.uk
