Over the summer holidays, more than 30 of the East Devon Tennis Academy’s (EDTA) players competed in multiple tournaments, including several at regional and national level with some great performances, writes Kirsty Robinson.

Benjamin Johnson and Maya Ichim played at national events in Bath, both getting good wins. Chris Denton became Cornwall County Champion in the boys’ 14U singles and doubles at the recent County Championships.

Four EDTA players (Ryan McCann, Marcus Robinson, Evie Fitzhenry and Isabelle Marks) competed in the 9U County Cup, making up half of the Devon team. They finished in second place to a strong Dorset team, with solid wins against Cornwall and Somerset. All the Exmouth players came away with both good wins and experience.

Thirty-one Exmouth players entered the biggest Grade Three (regional) tournament in the country – the Torbay open – with competitors from all over the country.

In the 8U boys’ singles, Alex Roper came away champion.

In the girls’ singles, Isabelle Marks came third in the 9U, and Maya Ichim was runner-up in the 10U.

In the boys’ events, Ryan McCann was runner-up in the 10U doubles, with his brother Connor winning the consolation draw for the 12U singles.

Lucas Urquiza also reached the semi-finals of the 14U competition.

In the boys’ doubles, Zac Brown and Chris Denton reached the semi-finals but were beaten by the eventual winners.

In the Penzance open, Chris Denton won the boys’ 14U singles and the doubles with partner Zac Brown. The pair also came runners-up in the 16U boys’ doubles.

Maddie Schuchter reached the semi-finals of the girls’ 14U singles and doubles, with some good wins.

In the Grade Three event at Taunton, Jessica Johnson came runner up in the girls’ 14U singles and Johana Kathi came runner-up in the girls’ 14U doubles.

Zac Brown and Lucas Urquiza made it to the semi-finals of the boys’ 14U singles. Ryan McCann was also a semi-finalist in the boys’ 10U singles.

Big thanks to all the EDTA coaches, without whom none of this would have been possible, and to Eagle Investments for providing financial support to the team.
