Budleigh Salterton’s fine recent run of form continued as they powered their way into the last eight of the Devon Premier Cup with an impressive 6-1 win at South Devon League Premier outfit Watcombe Wanderers.

The home side had beaten Crediton United in the surprise of the previous round, but were no match for the flying Robins, who made a high-tempo start and raced into a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes!

In just the fifth minute Mike White found himself in space on the left hand side and he crossed for Mark Lever to fire the visitors into the lead.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0 with Kyle Bassett applying the finish to a slick passing move.

In the 20th minute, Lever and Bassett combined to open up the home defence with Callum Shipton the goal scorer – expertly lifting the ball over the glovesman from the edge of the area.

Watcombe scored next with what proved to be their one serious first-half raid; Budleigh goalkeeper Alan Doble could do nothing about a smart finish from Kieran Bridge.

Any thoughts that there might be an early second-half storm to weather for the Budleigh back three, in which Dan Boere was the standout performer, were quickly dispelled as, eight minutes after the restart, Bassett glanced a header from a George Pannell free-kick into the home goal, to make it 4-1. Four minutes later Aaron Denny cut in from the left and delivered a perfect cross for Pannell to turn home and just past the hour mark Denny completed the scoring, again cutting in and this time drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

There could, perhaps should, have been a seventh for, with two minutes remaining, Graham Winteridge, who had been introduced from the bench eight minutes before, blazed over from close range.

Budleigh’s reward for the win was a home quarter-final tie against Teignmouth to be played next February.

Next on the agenda for Kevin Hill and his upwardly mobile Robins is Saturday’s game at home to University.

It’s the first home game for the Robins in six weeks – their last Greenway Lane outing being a 7-0 win over Liverton on October 28.
