Pannell impresses as Budleigh let lead slip in defeat at St Martins

PUBLISHED: 12:26 27 December 2017

Budleigh Salterton let slip a two-goal lead as they suffered a 4-3 defeat on their visit to St Martins on the Saturday before Christmas.

The Robins began well and went a goal up after just 12 minutes when Mike White got away down the left wing and crossed for Jordan Harris to power a header home.

It got better for another good following of Budleigh supporters at the Exminster-based club’s home pitch when a long clearance saw the ball land invitingly at the feet of Dan Boere and he saw the home glovesman slightly off his line and so sent a deft chip up and over him and into the net to leave the Robins 2-0 to the good after 25 minutes.

In the last minute of the first half Budleigh were a whisker away from a third – and arguably sealing all three points - when a cross-cum-shot from the impressive George Pannell clipped the crossbar.

Whatever was said in the home dressing room seemed to have the desired effect, although the Budleigh defending - or lack of it - played a part as St Martins scored four times in a purple spell of 13 minutes from the hour mark!

In the 62nd minute, the Budleigh defence failed to clear a corner and Jamie Durrane scored from close range and eight minutes later, in similar circumstances, a corner was not cleared and Dan Gill pounced to level things up. Two minutes later St Martins had the lead with Lee Parker the scorer and, completing the sequence of quick-fire goals, Ross Carstairs rifled home a 25-yard free-kick in the 75th minute to leave Budleigh with lots to do to take anything from the game.

They did show a response with player-boss Kevin Hill forcing the ball home at the far post in the 80th minute, but thereafter the home side shut up shop to see the game out and bank all three points.

In what was a generally disappointing afternoon for the Robins, the performance of George Pannell provided some cheer.
