Archant

The season is nearing its close, but there has been a flurry of friendly fixtures, writes Jenny Smith.

Madeira took four mixed rinks to Feniton, doing well to win all rinks and overall by 77 shots to 61.

Fittingly, the highest shot difference of plus seven was achieved by Pat Boman and her team of Lins Hambly and Halpin and Derek Blatchford, playing in his last bowls game ever.

Madeira did well in a men only six triples fixture at home against Sidmouth, winning five games, and overall by 116 shots to72.

This was considerably helped by Bob Walker and his team of John Spearing and Keith Weeks, who won by an impressive 15 shots.

Led by captain Dave Moody, Madeira members had a great day playing away at Cheltenham Spa, albeit in changeable weather.

Madeira won five of the seven mixed rinks and overall by 140 shots to 121, with the top rink of the day (plus 20) skipped by Ian Thomson playing with Dave Franklin, Lyn Stubbings and Graham Cottey.

As a result, Madeira retained the trophy, which has been played for on a home and away basis over the last 16 years.

Madeira took six rinks to Ottery St Mary for a most agreeable return match. At tea, the score was very close with both teams ahead on three rinks, but with Ottery having a slight advantage overall. But as is often said, ‘It all changes after tea’ and by the end of the match Madeira had won on four rinks, lost on one and drawn on the other to win 134-107.

Top rink honours (by just one shot) went to skip Dave Macaulay with his team of Graham Ellis, Mavis Prew and John Spearing.

Phear Park brought four mixed triples to Madeira and did well to win three games and overall by 69 shots to 62.

This was all despite the best efforts of Peter Harvey and his team of Jan Roberts and Denis Huntley who won the only game for the home team of plus 10.
