After such a dry season, the weather finally made its mark on bowling in the last week of the season, writes Jenny Smith.

However, after almost two days of rain, the weather miraculously improved on Sunday afternoon for the last drive of the season.

Around 40 members enjoyed the drive for the Beckhart Cup, although many found the bowling very heavy compared with the speedy conditions which have prevailed through most of the season.

The drive was won by Dave Clarbull, Myra Furminger and Chris Reed with plus 15 points.

Six mixed triples teams travelled to Bridport for an enjoyable and successful afternoon, winning three and drawing one game for an overall win of plus 10. Most games were closely-fought, but Madeira’s win was considerably helped by David Macaulay and his team of Graham Ellis and Dave Clarbull, who had the best shot difference of the day of plus 15.

Blustery conditions caused a few problems for both teams when Madeira hosted a visit from Dawlish Marina on Tuesday.

An enjoyable game was played, however, as the Dawlish players are always good company. Madeira’s top rink of Andy Lock, Angela Bolt, Dave Clarbull and skip Mary Solway won by 24-12, with Madeira emerging as overall match winners 68-57, each club having won two rinks.

Madeira men did well to win on seven rinks and by plus 53 shots when Gordon Thomas brought eight rinks to play on behalf of the Devon Patrons. Again, David Macaulay, playing with Brian Poulter, Steve Stott and Chris Smith, had an impressive win of plus 28. Shaldon ladies cancelled on Thursday because of the bad weather conditions, but captain Jude Latta took a ladies’ triples team to Sidmouth for what would prove to be the last ladies’ match of the season.

The game was played in intermittent rain and gusting, blustery winds. Despite their best efforts, Madeira lost on all three rinks.

It has been a trying season for Madeira ladies: two matches had to be cancelled due to weather conditions and a further two were cancelled by visiting teams. But of the remaining fixtures, Madeira won four and lost three.

Finally, two end-of-term reports are in. Team Six won the men’s Tuesday/Thursday Triples League with 33 points. Well done, to Dave Clarbull and his team of John Hopkins, Hugh Stedham, Brian Poulter, John Sweetman and Chris Price.

Team Three won the ladies’ Wednesday Triples League, played this year for the first season. Debbie Cole and her team of Carole Worth, Sandy Cox, Hilary Bird, Jean Bagnall and Sue Burr finished well ahead of the rest of the field.
