Madeira have been involved in a couple of large participation friendly matches as the outdoor season draws to a close, writes Jenny Smith.

Cheltenham BC arrived with 10 mixed rinks for a Monday meeting which was a close encounter throughout.

Madeira won on six of the rinks, but lost overall by a single shot!

Sandie Cox skipped her team of Chris Fox, Peter Wood and Maureen Willis to the best shot difference of the day for the home team of plus 15.

The following day Madeira men were in action against Leicester City, who they defeated 117-102.

On this occasion Mike Gorman skipped the team with the highest shot difference.

Playing with Alan Halpin, Denis Huntley and Dave Clarbull, the rink achieved a plus 16 score.

Madeira took six rinks to Topsham for a friendly match on Thursday. Despite some dark clouds, the rain held off for Madeira to win the match by 18 shots with top rink award going to skip Ken Roberts, Graham Ellis, Shirley Brown and Janet Grundy.

Both teams celebrated the penultimate game of a 70-year bowling career for Madeira’s Derek Blatchford as he had previously played at Topsham for 38 years, winning his Devon County badge during this time.

Derek concluded his long and illustrious involvement in outdoor bowls at Feniton the following day; again playing in a friendly match for Madeira, but this time at the club of which he was a founder member in 1971.

To finish the week, the Bowls Devon President Mike Birch brought eight rinks to Madeira on Friday for a competitive men only fixture, which the president and his team won by 174 shots to 126. The best shot difference for the three winning rinks of the home team was achieved by Peter Harvey, who, playing with Chris Fox, Paul Wratten and David Mansell, won by plus eight shots.
