Jack Howarth was clinical in front of goal, scoring six times as East Budleigh ran out winners in a twelve-goal thriller against Newtown, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh led 6-0 ten minutes into the second half, but the visitors made a game of it in a frantic second half.

Five minutes in, Liam Mabin picked out Dan Atkinson; he laid the ball off for George Harris whose left foot centre was converted by that man Howarth.

Six minutes later, Liam Matthew’s shot was tipped away for a corner and from the resultant Harris kick Atkinson headed back and Howarth stole in to nod home.

The treble was complete on 17 minutes; Hugo Demetre sprayed a fine ball out to Harris whose peach of a cross was swept home by Howarth

Budleigh’s fourth saw Howarth turn provider for Atkinson, who unleashed a superb long-range shot into the roof of the net.

On the half hour Budleigh went nap [STEVE - what does ‘went nap’ mean?]; Mabin swung in another well struck corner and when the ball dropped for Howarth he crashed it home.

The second period started like the first with Matthew and Harris both denied by the away keeper, before Budleigh added a sixth; Howarth picked up a clearance from Joe Day and showed all his composure to slot home his fifth with a cultured finish.

Two minutes later the visitors pulled one back and suddenly there was panic in the Budleigh defence! Two more goals arrived before Howarth struck again when Matthew squared for him to score.

Newtown threw everything into a final 15 minutes and managed to score twice more to complete a crazy, but entertaining, end-of-season fixture.
