Archant

Budleigh Salterton Reserves saw off Pinhoe by the odd goal in five when the teams clashed in a Macron League Division Three game at Greenway Lane, writes SpursTom.

The Robins found their final match of 2017 to be a tense affair with the outcome in the balance almost through to the full-time whistle.

The opening goal came direct from an in-swinging corner, superbly delivered by Ben Haycock – the ball going into the net after first striking the frame of the goal.

Just before the half hour, Pinhoe spurned a glorious chance to level things up when they blasted a penalty wide of the goalmouth.

Minutes later play switched to the opposite end of the pitch and when a teasing cross was delivered into the area, Ollie Henton climbed above everybody else to head Budleigh into a 2-0 lead that they carried through into half-time.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Pinhoe halved the deficit, but, five minutes after being pegged back, Budleigh had restored the two-goal advantage when the impressive Haycock got his second when put through in a one-on-one with the visiting glovesman in which he came out on top.

Pinhoe reduced the lead once more in the last few minutes of normal time. In a lengthy period of added time, play was frantic and Budleigh hit the woodwork three times, whilst Pinhoe were close to an equaliser.

However, the referee finally blew the whistle to signal a terrific win for the home side.

The Reserves are not back in action until Saturday, January 6, 2018, the first of their final nine fixtures in which they fight to remain in Division Three.
