The first-ever outing of the new combined Exmouth/Withycombe girls’ Under-15s team proved to be a massive success.

The actual match between them and Bridgwater Albion followed an inaugural ‘open session’ of girls’ rugby that was led by coach Ben Mardle and involved a mix of girls between the age groups of U13 and U18. In the session, clearly enjoyed by one and all, those taking part got the opportunity to learn skills to help develop their game.

When the session was over the match began and it turned out to be a fast-paced contest with some terrific tackling being displayed all over the pitch!

One of the team coaching staff remarked: “The girls so clearly grew into the game, learning fast on how to manage the defence and attack around the pitch. What was so encouraging was to see, particularly in the second half, so many competing with great confidence in the rucks and starting to get some turnover success.

“The excitement was so much that two of our coaches where caught hugging each other!”

The coach continued: “A massive thank you, first to Bridgwater Albion for coming to play us for this, our first-ever match and also to all parents and supporters that came and made all that noise. Thanks must also go to the Under-13s who, to a girl, stayed and offered support to their team-mates.

All the coaches are extremely proud and still buzzing about how the girls so clearly enjoyed what they were taking part in.”
