Archant

Exmouth Town’s wonderful start to the new season arguably reached new heights during their midweek visit to meet Plymouth Argyle Reserves as they managed to net a single goal clean sheet win, writes John Dibsdall.

In what was a terrific all-round performance, Town were good value for the win against a young but experienced Argyle side at this level.

The only goal of the contest came from the very first Town attack on the night! A corner, delivered by Nathan Cooper, was not properly cleared and, when it was played back into the area, Cooper, coming in from the left flank, smashed the ball home.

Thereafter Town needed to be strong and disciplined as Argyle stroked the ball around very well – and they were!

Argyle did fashion a couple of half-chances before the break, but they were unable to find an equalising goal.

The second half saw more of the same with Argyle enjoying the lion’s share of the ball, but Town always looked threatening on the break!

From one such move Callum Shipton brought a stupendous save from Woodbury lad Michael Cooper in the Argyle goal.

Town did have to clear a shot off the line and Argyle also saw an effort kept out by the width of the post, but Town, who worked their socks off throughout, were good value for the victory.

On Saturday (September 29) Town end the month with a home game against Newquay-based Godolphin Atlantic (3pm). Town go into the game sitting fifth and the Cornish side are ninth.
