Exmouth suffer defeat on visit to a Heathcoat side that are the new table-toppers

Exmouth lost for the fourth time in 10 Tolchards Devon League Premier Division outings as they went down by 29 runs to a Heathcoat side that has now taken over at the top of the table.

The Knightshayes men batted first and closed on 262-6 with former Sidmouth batsman Liam Lewis top scoring with 69 and Pete Randerson hit 60. There was precious little success for the Exmouth bowlers with just two netting a pair – Pete Turnbull finished with figures of 2-52 and David Lye’s brace was at a cost of 36 runs.

Calum French and Alvin Pollard launched the run chase, but were parted with the score on 25 with French trapped leg before for 13. Nine runs later Pollard joined him back in the pavilion after being caught and bowled for 16.

Sandy Allen joined number three bat Miles Lenygon and they took the reply to within one run of 100 when Lenygon fell for a six-boundary, 59-ball knock of 45. Dan Pyle was next man in, but he lost Allen when the wicket keeper batsman was on 36 with the score then 129-4 and it was soon 144-5 with the loss of skipper Bob Dawson for seven.

David Lye joined Pyle and played the supporting role as the pair added 53 runs for the sixth wicket which, crucially, was that of Pyle, but not before he had faced just 51 deliveries, clearly enjoying a sun-kissed Knightshayes wicket, hitting five fours and three sixes on his way to a splendid 68. Had Pyle not been caught off the spin of jack Menheneott then he would surely have led the Maer men to victory.

However, out he was, and the final four wickets added just 36 runs with Exmouth losing their final wicket to the final ball of the 47th over with the reply on 233.

As a result of this latest defeat, Exmouth sit fourth and are 25 points shy of new leaders Heathcoat. On Saturday (July 7) the Maer men face seventh placed North Devon, who have 126 points, 38 fewer than the leaders and 43 clear of second bottom Bradninch.
