Exmouth Deep Sea Fishing Club held their annual general meeting and chairman Gareth Awbery presided over the 68th such annual meeting, attended by over 40 members.

Exe Sailing Club hosted the meeting which heard the chairman say that the poor weather last during the year had led to the cancellation of too many trips, but those that had run had been successful, with some good catches of cod and pollack. The restrictions on bass fishing had meant that many anglers had fished for other species and there had been some good plaice caught locally.

The club had won the annual competition with Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club in August with a wrasse of over 5lbs.

For the coming season the club is running 28 charter trips, many using local boats and skippers including Rose Ann with Mike Baker from Exmouth and Blue Lady with Cyril Newton from Beer. The club will be running trips further afield too, from Penzance, Ilfracombe, Padstow, West Bay and Brixham.

The club awards prizes every year for the best fish caught and this year cup winners included: David Waddington for the greatest number of species caught in a day – eight; Alf Ritchie, who landed a bull huss of 8lbs 4ozs; Peter Cloke, for the heaviest plaice (5lbs) and Pollack (17 lbs 4ozs); Jonathon Moore, for the heaviest bass (5lbs 4ozs); Gareth Awbery, for the heaviest cod (17 lbs); Bob Weston, with the heaviest bream (3lbs 11 ozs) and Ben Oates, for the heaviest whiting (4lbs 4ozs)

The highlight of the evening was the presentation by Simon Ridler. Simon has recently taken over the fish shop on Exmouth Quay - now called ‘Fish on the Quay’ selling mainly fish and shellfish caught by local boats.

Simon gave a very interesting and inspiring talk and demonstration on how to dress a crab and a lobster, fillet a gurnard and flatfish and prepare a squid, with tips about how to cook them.

Copies of the 2017 club programme are available in Fish on the Quay, Harbour News, Exmouth Tackle and Sports and Exeter Angling Centre.

Experienced and inexperienced new members are made every welcome – further details on how to join are included in the 2017 programme or you can contact Gareth Awbery (01395 278797) or Don Kenwood (01275 343949).
