Exmouth 2nds were crowned champions of the Tolchards Devon League D Division East following their final day four wicket win at a Chardstock 1st XI side that they will meet again next year in the C Division – Chardstock and Heathcoat 2nds gaining promotion with the Maer men.

The home side batted first and closed on what looked a very useful 254-6.

However, Exmouth 2nds’ skipper, Lawrence Greenway, then saw his batsmen deliver the goods as they completed a successful run chase.

Sean Day, with an unbeaten 81, and Sam Goodier, who was not out 58, saw the Maer men over the winning line. Along the way there were also contributions of 41 from James Horler and 26 from Luke Davies.

Reflecting on the team’s title win – the Maer men won the title by a margin of seven points from Heathcoat 2nds – skipper Lawrence Greenway said: “The hallmark to the success is down to a couple of factors. There’s amazing team spirit and there are certainly no egos.

“Throughout the campaign everyone has enjoyed each other’s individual and collective success through the matches.
“It’s also been key that we found ways to win games when it looked more likely that we were going to lose. Every player has been responsible for winning at least one game this season with an individual contribution at just the right time.”

As for the stand-out individuals, the skipper said: “ Sean Day has been incredible. He has taken the new ball every week, taken around 25 wickets and gone at less than three runs an over and also scored over 400 runs.”

He continued: “Richard Baggs coming down from the first team really helped in the second half of the season.

“His experience and desire to win was a really positive influence and certainly helped me as captain too.

“All the youngsters have really matured this season and have contributed week in, week out and are all turning into fine cricketers.

“It’s been a pleasure to captain the side.”

Next season, Exmouth 2nds will line up in the C Division East where they will meet the likes of Sidmouth III, Alphington, Exeter II, Ottery St Mary, Whimple, Braunton, Heathcoat II, Chardstock and Shobrooke Park.
