The competitive golfing year finally got under way for the ladies of East Devon Golf Club as they competed for the first trophies of the season in the Spring Meeting, writes Helen Chivers.

The weather had frustrated the players for weeks, with competitions cancelled due to snow, rain and fog, so it perhaps is no surprise that the Spring Meeting also fell foul of the fickle British weather – being played over two weeks rather than the customary two days!

In the individual medal competition, Sue Harrison claimed victory over the 77-strong field to take home the Burden Trophy for the best nett score. Her four under par round of nett 70 was two shots clear of Annie Dent.

Emily Morey recorded the best gross score of the day, taking home the Baker Cup on countback from Judy Murray and Sue Harrison as they all recorded scores of 88.

Sue and Judy took the first two places in Silver Division, Judy recording a nett 75 with Carole Brailey taking third place a shot further back on nett 76. Rowan Edbrooke was fourth on countback from Hilary Shiels as they both recorded scores on nett 77.

Annie Dent was well clear at the top of Bronze Division with a two under par round of nett 72, five shots clear of the rest of the division. Linda Longmuir took second place on countback from 2018 ladies’ captain Maria Heard as they both scored nett 77. A shot further back on nett 78 were Margaret Webb, Judy Robinson and Jane Morton, Margaret taking fourth place on countback.

The foursomes stableford competition was won by the pairing of Marilyn Gerrard and Jane Williams, who came home with a three under par round of 39 points.

They were two shots clear of the pairings of Ali Miller and Shirley Horsburgh and Helen Chivers and Jennie Stogdon on one under par 37 points.

Fourth place went to Sue Burley and Nina Hawkins on 35 points with Hilary Greenaway and Anne Serle in fifth with 34 points.

Marilyn and Jane will represent the ladies at the next round of the Coronation Foursome competition staged by the R&A, the grand final of which will be played in September on the Eden Course, St Andrews.
