East Devon ladies Still Cup team were victorious in the semi finals of the Devon County inter-club competition at Honiton Golf Club last week, writes Helen Chivers.

For the second year running the team were drawn against local rivals Exeter Golf and Country Club, and, once again, they proved the stronger side to qualify for the finals at Tiverton Golf Club at the end of September.

The seven singles matches are played off scratch and were hard fought. Evie Stone and Gill Whitehead had a titanic battle in the first – with the match still level after 18 holes Exeter’s Gill Whitehead eventually claimed victory on the third extra hole.

In the second and third matches, Claire Dowling and Emily Morey both won three up with two holes to play, defeating Grace Jackson and Charlotte Husband respectively.

Eilidh Cameron was the third East Devon player to put a point on the board, beating Jane Wayman four up with three to play in the sixth match.

Victory was sealed for the East Devon team as the fourth and fifth matches holed out on the 17th and 16th holes – Helen Chivers winning two up with one to play against Anne Norman, and Sally Underwood defeating Liz Mapson three up with two to play.

The final match between Alison Corney and Viv Worthington didn’t need to finish, with Exeter’s Viv one up with two to play when they were called in.

In the second semi-final, holders Torquay beat Saunton ladies to set up a repeat of last years final against East Devon.

The East Devon ladies are hoping it’ll be second time lucky in the finals at Tiverton Golf Club on Friday, September 28, while Torquay are looking to retain the trophy for the third year in a row.
