Archant

The December medal was played at East Devon on Saturday – the last of the year, writes Paul Willoughby.

The conditions were only for the tough nuts; there was a cold north north-west wind (gusting to hurricane!), which appeared to be in your face whichever direction you were facing. Those conditions required loads of clothes which, whilst keeping the players warm, hindered their swings, so all credit to those of the seventy-nine participants whose names appeared in lights.

So what’s going on in the golfing world away from East Devon?

Well, of note is the PGA Hero World Golf championship, which took place at the Albany course in the Bahamas, designed by one Ernest Els.

Can you imagine playing there – shorts, T-shirts and temperatures in the late 70s, a far cry from the weather at East Devon last Saturday; dream on.

However, the Albany course is a stonker; it has links and desert features together with sand dunes and a lot of water – water with ball magnets just below the surface!

Add to that its length of 7,400 yards (East Devon is 6,206) and you have one of the most challenging courses in the world.

However hard they make the courses, the professionals still seem to take them in their stride; the winner was Ricky Fowler from the USA at -18, finishing with an amazing eleven under 61 in his final round.

The pundits describe that as ‘...playing solid...’! England’s Tommy Fleetwood was -12 and Justin Rose was -11; lovely to see those two up with the leaders. However, well worthy of note was Tiger Woods; he scored minus eight with a 68 in his final round. Very well done, to him and what a recovery after so many back operations. He’s the man to watch in 2018. If only he would smile a bit more.

The results in the divisions were as follows:-

Division 1: 1, Jim Colvin, net 66 from a handicap of Four, now three. Well done, Jim; 2, Clive Bennett, 67 (6); 3, Joe Sharp, 70; (4), Tony Beck, 70 (6)

Division 2: 1, Steve Robinson, net 66, (13 now 11); 2, Chris Bird, 69 (11 now 10); 3, Matthew Maslen, 70 (12); 4, Kevin Jennings, 70 (10)

Division 3: 1, Tom Peters, net 68 (22 now 21); 2, Charlie Stafford, 70 (14); 3, Julian Reynolds, 70 (15 now 14); 4, Ray Dawson, 71 (14)

There are two players who deserve a mention; John May had a hole in one – well done, John; some players can go through a lifetime without doing that.

The other player to note is Clive Bennett who has had an Exceptional Scoring Reduction applied to his handicap because he has had at least two rounds of four or more below his handicap in recent competitions. Well done, Clive.
