East Budleigh Reserves booked their place in the next round of the Devon Intermediate Cup with a very accomplished and solid performance to defeat a Starcross Generals side that plays their football two leagues higher, writes Mark Auton.

The visitors played some sound football and passed the ball around well, but Budleigh were committed to every tackle and Lewis Fletcher, Shaun Mabin, Dave Clow and Wayne Gooding defended well as a unit.

At the other end of the pitch, Budleigh were also creative and it was Josh Sale that was at the heart of most things good.

In an even first period, Joe Craven and Matt Tidmarsh went close for the Jays.

After the interval it was Budleigh that found another gear to stamp their authority on proceedings; Craig Leaman, on his return to the club, came off the bench and his first major contribution was to set up the opener. With the outside of his right foot he provided the perfect ball for Jack Hocking, who netted a goal that his efforts deserved.

The away side went in search of a reply; Budleigh keeper Drew Shorrock made an excellent parry to keep his side ahead.

Eight minutes from time Budleigh sealed the win; Hocking won the ball back for Sale, who created the perfect chance for Josh Rowland to score. In a fine all round display, Sale just shaded Hocking for the Man of the Match award.

This Saturday (September 22) Budleigh return to league action when they host Okehampton Argyle. (3pm).

The East Budleigh first team departed the Devon Senior Cup, disappointingly, at Clyst Valley. Hugo Demetre grabbed a consolation for a Budleigh side who will look to bounce back at Ottery St Mary on Saturday (3pm).
