East Budleigh were edged out by the odd goal in five when they entertained Macron League Division Two table-toppers Bampton, writes Mark Auton.

In what was a fast and furious entertaining game, it was Bampton who took the points, but only after dishing up a second half comeback.

A brisk start from the visitors saw Matt Jones clear off his own line, before Liam Matthew had an effort saved at the other end.

Bampton had the better of the first quarter and squandered a couple of good chances until Budleigh stamped their authority on proceedings.

In the 28th minute Matthew headed against the bar from a Liam Mabin set piece, Dan Atkinson’s follow up was blocked before Jack Howarth found the back of the net.

Five minutes later Hugo Demetre laid the ball off for Howarth, who unleashed a drive that hit the bar. The hard-working Jacob Rice picked up the rebound and squared for Atkinson to make it two.

Atkinson then went close again, denied by the visiting keeper when set up again by Rice.

In what was a spicy second half the away side got the perfect tonic a minute in, pulling one back and 10 minutes later levelled the scores.

Budleigh battled away but the momentum was now with the table-toppers! Joe Day produced a fine block and keeper Dean Rawlings an excellent save, but he was unable to prevent a third goal. Rawlings did make a fine penalty save low to his right before the end.

This Saturday (April 15), Budleigh visit Newtown, whilst the Reserves are also away with a trip to Tedburn St Mary.
