Withycombe Under-16s were handsome 40-21 winners when they travelled to Mid Devon to take on Crediton in their latest Fisherman’s Cup tie.

From the kick-off Withy, playing up the slope, worked their way up field and, following good line-out and scrum work, Matt Oliver crossed in the corner for the opening try of the game and Will Copper fired over the conversion.

Crediton hit back and began to apply pressure on the Withy line, but the visiting defence was good and, when they were able to break, the fleet-footed Matt Shaw-Smith showed the home back line a clean set of heels and another Cooper conversion saw Withy double their lead.

The home side hit back with a converted try of their own, but Withy were soon back on the front foot and, after some hard work going forward, Matt Edworthy crossed the home line and another successful conversion saw Withy into a 21-7 lead. The final score of the half went to the hosts, but when the half-time whistle was blown Withy were holding a 21-14 lead.

After the break, Withy, playing down the slope, were guilty of some sloppy handling which gave the home side some good exit options.

However, a speculative kick by Will Cooper was followed by a good chase by Matt Rye, who picked up and crossed under the posts to leave a straightforward conversion.

Late in the game, Withy were guilty of ball watching and complacency which let Crediton gather some loose ball and score a converted try.

However, Withy always held the upper hand and there was still time for two further tries, both scored by full back Lewis Hillier to round off an excellent afternoon’s work by the Withy team.

The Withy Man of the Match awards went to Liam Daniels and Lewis Hillier.
