Exmouth secured the bonus point in their 26-20 victory over Ivybridge.

The win delighted head coach Jon Hill who said: “A sublime, forward-orientated performance saw us dominate Ivybridge at scrum and maul time, and former Ivybridge Community College pupil Tom Barnard deservedly gained the Man of the Match for a huge scrum performance.”

He continued: “Ivybridge once again started brightly, in similar fashion to our first meeting with them earlier in the season, scoring an interception try, but as the game went on, we certainly grabbed hold of the fixture and could have put the game to bed a little earlier.

“Three disallowed push over tries, two from scrums [both were scored by Sam Richardson] and one from a driving maul, somewhat harsh on the Exmouth forwards , which was a shame. At least two Ivybridge players were very lucky to stay on the field for illegally dragging down mauls, such was our superiority.”

Hill was particularly pleased with the second half performance. He said: “An excellent second half performance saw us dominate territory and possession, and to be fair to Ivybridge, they were in our 22 metre area just once in the second half and scored a drive maul try.

“They contributed widely to the game and Damon Ackerman looked especially lively in broken field play.”

He continued: “The character of the team was there for all to see, and most teams would have just run the clock down to take the four points and a narrow victory, so it was great to see us raise the tempo in injury time and work our way up the pitch to claim a big bonus point try.”

That completes the 2017 fixture calendar for the Cockles and, to summarise the final Saturday action of the year, Hill said: “This was a fantastic way to sign off 2017, with some good momentum gained before Christmas in what was another good day for the club. The 2nd XV were also winners, they bagged a terrific 33-7 victory away at Ivybridge to complete an excellent club double over our Devon rivals.

“We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members and sponsors a fantastic Christmas and New Year, and thank you all for supporting us.”
