Budleigh Salterton Reserves had a great chance of gaining their first three pointer of the season, but they let it slip away as they ended up sharing four goals with visiting Axmouth United in an entertaining Macron Devon and Exeter League Division Three match, writes SpursTom.

This was by no means a ‘dirty match’, yet three players went off injured. Axmouth United’s Kyle Driver was taken off on a stretcher with a leg injury in the first half (an ambulance was called for, but had not arrived when I left the ground after the game). Teammate Travis Dark left the pitch with a suspected broken nose, and Budleigh keeper Simon Savage with a broken finger; both these incidents occurred in the second period.

The first period ended in a stalemate 1-1, but the visitors, playing the better team football, created the most chances, with all the drama of the half coming in the final five minutes of normal time starting with Driver’s injury which, minutes later, was followed by Scott Dyer firing the visitors ahead.

However, just six minutes later Gareth Davies levelled things for the Robins.

The second period began badly for the hosts; Dave Clarke picking up the pieces of a clearance to restore the advantage for Axmouth in the 48th minute.

Not long afterwards Axmouth’s Travis Dark went off injured, and as the visitors had already used their only substitute, they were forced to play the remainder of the game a man light.

On 61 minutes, the Robins were awarded a penalty and Tom Christian duly despatched the ball to level things up at 2-2.

Budleigh applied the expected pressure, even being assisted by an Axmouth player getting himself sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes with 15 minutes remaining, leaving the visitors with nine men for the next 10 minutes!

However, the home side still could not find the target, and almost conceded themselves, and would surely have done, but for the bravery of keeper Simon Savage, who suffered a broken finger protecting his goal, with Matt Skinner replacing him between the sticks.

What is apparent from this game is the need for a goal scorer in the Robins’ ranks.
