Budleigh Salterton suffered an 11th defeat in 13 South West Peninsula League Eastern Division outings, but their 8-1 defeat at high-flying Bovey Tracey does not reflect the balance of play over 90 minutes, writes Alan Beer.

For long periods of the contest the Robins gave as good as they got and, once again, fortune was not smiling on them in South Devon.

There was an element of luck about the first two home goals. The first, after 15 minutes, came when Alan Doble made a smart initial save only for the ball to fall invitingly to Dan Taylor and then the wind assisted a 20th minute corner from Lewis Perrin to make it 2-0. For the remainder of the half Budleigh gave as good as they got before, with two minutes to go to the interval, a corner was not cleared and Ollie Aplin made it 3-0. There was still time left for Johnny Hitchcock to race in on goal in a one-on-one that went the way of the home glovesman and so, instead of going in two goals down, the Robins trailed by three!

Two minutes into the second half Aplin made it 4-0 after which it became the Sean Finch shift as the hitman helped himself to four second half goals – albeit two of them arriving in the dying embers of the contest.

Battling Budleigh scored a richly deserved consolation when 6-0 down when Johnny Hitchcock drilled the ball home from 20 yards and the frame of the goal denied George Pannell’s terrific effort from 25-yards when the score was 5-0.

So another defeat for the Robins who showed plenty of spirit. Johnny Hitchcock was the pick of the Budleigh players on the day. On Saturday (November 3), Budleigh are in Devon Premier Cup action when they visit Feniton for an Acland Park contest that kicks off at 2pm.
