Budleigh Salterton were edged out by a margin of just 13 runs when they visited Bideford, Littleham and Westward Ho! for their latest Tolchards Devon League A Division game.

Skipper Trevor Anning won the toss and opted to field first and he saw the home side reduced to 46-4 with two wickets for Adam Jones, one for Max Mejzner and one for himself. Two of the wickets fell to catches, with Ed Doble and Lloyd Murrin showing safe hands. The home side rallied and got to 115 when wicketkeeper James Doble held a catch off the bowling of fourth change Max Mejzner to leave them five down. From there it was downhill to the end of the innings as the final five wickets added just 19 runs with the home side bowled out for 134 in 46.4 overs.

Ed Doble, who had a ‘fiver’ the week before, had another good afternoon with the ball, returning figures of 4-18 from 8.4 overs and Max Mejzner’s return was 3-22 from seven overs. The other Budleigh wicket takers were Adam Jones (2-29 from six overs) and skipper Anning (1-12 from six).

Marc Trotman and Trevor Anning began the reply and they took the score to 35 before Anning fell to a catch for a 30-ball 23. Ed Doble was next man in – and out – run out having faced 47 deliveries for his 14 to leave Budleigh 78-2.

The Doble dismissal sparked a collapse with just 16 runs being added as six wickets fell to leave Budleigh 94-8!

Number 10 batsman Joel Murphy joined Will Oxland and the pair took the run chase into three figures before Oxland fell for a 42-ball knock of 12.

That left Budleigh still needing 29 runs to win with the last pair at the wicket.

Adam Jones and Murphy chipped away at the required runs and got their side to within 13 of victory when Jones was caught having faced 16 balls for his six. Murphy was the not out batsman on 11 from 15 deliveries, but Budleigh were just short and slipped to a seventh defeat of the league season.

On Saturday, Budleigh host promotion-seeking Paignton.
