Wins on three of the four mixed rinks on a sunny afternoon by the Budleigh bowlers resulted in an impressive 26-shot win over Belmont, writes David Roberts.

Anne Goddard, Graham Rant and skip Brian Summers were quick out of the blocks and raced to an 11-1 lead and restricted their opponents to scoring on only four of the 18 ends.

Ann Vincent, Peter Hillman and Gerry Roberts fought back scoring eleven shots in two ends to win 20-12, whilst Mike Clark, Marilyn Foreman and Brian Goddard finished strongly with another eleven shot finish without reply to take their rink 21-15.

Touring side Leicester City visited Budleigh and left victorious after a 142-68 final score, totally outplaying the home side and winning on all six rinks.

There were also losses for both men and women against Sidmouth. The men at home went down 59-70 even though the rinks were shared. Derek Stanley, Brian Ward and skip Paul Griffin kept the lead throughout to win 19-11, whilst Tony Lim, Stephen Lacey and Brian Goddard again dominated to win their rink 19-12. The ladies lost away 53-42, although sharing the rinks. Anne Clarke, Ann Vincent and Mo Bond won on the last end 18-15 registering three shots, whilst Anne Goddard, Ann Membery and Di Dixon held on to draw 15-15 scoring the all-important shot on the last end to achieve the tie.

The last two weeks of the outdoor season have arrived as the club welcomes the last touring side this summer, the men’s presidential tour from the Isle of Wight – and also visit Bradninch in the last mixed friendly.

Captain’s Day is scheduled for September 22, when the presentation of trophies will take place.
