Battling Budleigh edged out by visiting St Martins

Budleigh Salterton were edged out 1-0 in their Wednesday night meeting with St Martins, writes Alan Beer.

The Exminster side have made another strong start to a new season while the Robins have yet to register a point, but there was little between the sides throughout a close contest under the Greenway Lane floodlights.

The opening 20 minutes were even-steven, with defences on top and very few chances at either end.

The only goal of the game came in the 28th minute when a long through-ball was latched onto by Ben Watson who drilled the ball home from 18 yards.

The remainder of the first half saw more midfield action without too much drama in either penalty area.

It stayed that way at the start of the second half, but, in the final 15 minutes Budleigh began to look the stronger of the teams.

A fine ball from George Pannell arrived at the feet of Hugo Demetre, making his first appearance back in a Budleigh shirt after a move from East Budleigh, but his shot was fractionally wide of the mark.

Eight minutes later Budleigh were even closer to leveling when substitute Craig Higham, with almost his first touch, saw a sharp effort come back off the foot of the post with the St Martins glovesman well beaten.

The single goal defeat was harsh on Budleigh who, once again came out of a league game having been beaten, but once more they were able to take plenty of positives from their overall performance.

On Saturday Budleigh have their best chance of finally ending their duck in terms of looking for a first win when they travel into Exeter to meet University.

With Budleigh going into the game with an early season record of played six and lost six and the students heading into it with a played eight lost eight (they were beaten 5-1 at Sidmouth Town on Wednesday night|), something has to give in Exeter on Saturday afternoon.
