A man is being supported by mental health professionals after spending hours on a bridge over the M5, leading huge delays in Devon last night (Friday).

The M5 was closed in both directions between junction 28 (Collompton) and junction 29 (Exeter Airport) due to concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge at junction 28.

The motorway remained closed for around six hours, between 4pm and 10pm, leaving many drivers stranded in the cold.

Tailbacks went as far as junction 31 (Exminster) and roads around the M5 were also very busy.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed at 8.45pm: “Pleased to inform you all the man is off the bridge and in the hands of mental health professionals receiving support.

“The road is being cleared and will be open momentarily to allow traffic to clear.”

However, a number of vehicles had broken down after they ran out of petrol or the batteries had died, and this resulted in a greater backlog.

One man reported on Twitter that his wife and eight-week-old baby were trapped in the traffic and running out of petrol in a very cold car.

Highways England supported the police to move the broken down vehicles and re-opened the motorway at 9.45pm.
