Animal becomes stuck between two groynes with the tide rapidly rising.

Firefighters faced a desperate race against time this morning (Friday, December 23) to save a horse from drowning on Exmouth beach.

A special water rescue team was called to assist the local crew after the animal became become stuck between two wooden groynes at around 11.30am.

With high tide due at 1.30pm people were worried the horse would become stuck and not escape in time.

A Fire Brigade spokesman said: “The horse would not jump back over the groyne and the tide was coming in.”

Firefighter Heith George and colleagues built a ramp with sand and then Mr George led the animal around by its head harness and coaxed it into jumping back over, using the sand ramp.

Jon Chalk, group commander, said: “Exmouth firefighters are specially trained in a variety of rescue techniques including water rescue and animal rescue.

“In this incident they were able to utilise their specialist skills to assist the horse.”
